Itinerary for the Salta to Humahuaca Tour
Pick up at your hotel in air-conditioned minibus for the drive north into Jujuy province. We climb to 2200 meters and enter the gorge before arriving at the ancient pueblo of Purmamarca in time to see the sunlight on the stunning 7 color hill, which was believed to hold Godlike power in tribal times. Visit to the Plaza to see traditional crafts at the artesan stalls and the small adobe church.
Next stop is Humahuaca at 3000 metres/9843 feet altitude where the gauchos held back the invaders during the battle for Independence and a huge memorial is erected high above the plaza. Lunch is at a traditional pena with local music (not included)
We head back south through the gorge to Tilcara, another tribal village and visit the Pucara (hill top fort) dating back ten centuries. We then see the fabulous Painter’s Palette rock formation at Maimara and the hillside village of the dead. A quick tour of San Salvador de Jujuy capital, before returning to Salta city and drop off at your hotel 7-8pm.
