Salta Wine Tour

21 Sep

For aficionados looking for an off-track experience, a Salta Wine Tour, to visit Salta wineries is an absolutely essential part of any wine tour of Argentina.
The Salta wineries are a stunning region, far from Buenos Aires or Mendoza, home to the highest altitude vineyards in the world, planted by Jesuit priests in the 16th century. Some of the wineries in Salta, or bodegas as they are called here, have been in the same family for centuries and have also benefited from consultant European expert winemakers, making for an exceptional, robust wine.

Your three day Salta Wine tour Itinerary is as follows-

DAY 1 Pick up at your Salta Hotel and travel south through the verdant Lerma Valley into the Quebrada de las Conchas – prehistoric Shell Gorge, one of the world’s great drives through moonscapes of molten rock.
Arrive Cafayate in time for lunch at a winery high in the hills with spectacular views across the vines. Spend the afternoon at Salta wine tastings at top quality wineries, by appointment only and not open to bus tour crowds. There are twenty wineries in the area but we select only the most unique, based on your particular requests. O/N Cafayate

DAY 2 After breakfast we drive into the Calchaqui Valley, where the Calchaqui tribe resisted the Inca and the Spanish conquistadores for 130 years. We enter Arrow Gorge, another stunning formation of blasted rock, then continue through Molinos along a dirt track into the high altitude altiplano, and discover Bodega Colome.

We will enjoy a Salta Argentina wine tasting with Colome’s sommelier, Pedro Aquino, and hear about the history of the world’s highest bodega. The tasting includes some Colome vintages only available on the estancia as well as the ‘mysteriosa’ from a vine so old, no one knows what variety it actually is. After lunch in the restaurant, and a visit to the incredible James Turrell light museum, we return to Molinos with a stop to visit the vicuna ranch, for overnight at the Hacienda.

DAY 3 After breakfast, we drive across the high altitude desert to Seclantas, and the artesano route before arrival at Cachi. This tiny pueblo is home to some small winemakers and a host of charm. We continue to a working estancia for lunch from the parilla – every single item on the menu is hand-crafted from their own produce and the meat is out of this world. If available, the owner will lead you on a personal tour of the vineyards and tasting in the winery and offer a sampling of this unique and special wine (favorite of Donald Hess, owner of Colome). Afternoon drive through the National cactus park, home to an army of tall cardones and return to Salta City. End of Salta, Argentina Wine Tour

This 3 day tour of Salta wineries with private guide and vehicle, including 2 nights boutique accommodation (upgrade available) with breakfast starts at US$1450 for TWO people. All tastings and entry fees are included but lunches are not as individual tastes vary.

This Tour may be combined with the Mendoza Wineries Tour and the Mendoza to Salta Tour (or reverse)
