The three day, two night Tolar Grande Tour in 4×4 is a chance to experience the high desert lunar landscape. Take some amazing photographs and unwind in the serene natural surroundings. There is no need to trek across Bolivia to Uyuni when Tolar Grande is available. This is also a very scenic alternate route for crossing from Salta to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile.
Tolar Grande Tour Itinerary
DAY 1- Pick up at your hotel in Salta and drive through the Quebrada del Toro following the route of the famous Train to the Clouds. We will see the train and the many viaducts and the engineering feats it passes through on its journey across the Andes to the Pacific. We will visit the pre-Colombian ruins at Santa Rosa de Tastil before arrival at 4200meters altitude in San Antonio de los Cobres, an ancient and traditional Andes mining town. Time for lunch then a visit to the El Polvorillo Viaduct.
We then enter another world landscape of volcanic flats and cones, as we visit Laguna Miscanti, Miniques and the Labyrinth Desert before the massive salt flat of Salar de Alizaro opens before us. Evening arrival at Tolar Grande for overnight.
DAY 2 – We drive across the altiplano to visit spectacular geographical sites. Walk on the Salar, visit the green oasis de Antofalla and Mina Casualidad. After a packed lunch al fresco, we visit the Arita Cone, the Hidden Dune and Ojos de Mar. Return to Tolar Grande in time for sunset. Overnight.
DAY 3 – After breakfast we pack up and take the stunning route back to San Antonio de los Cobres, the Quebrada del Toro and our final destination, drop off at your hotel in Salta City.
NOTE – This tour may be continued as a FOUR DAY option to Salinas Grandes and Purmamarca. You may also continue through Paso de Sico to Tatio Geysers and the colored lagoons to San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. Please mail us to create your bespoke Tolar Grande journey.
Check out the video clips of the Cono Arita and Laguna Colorado below and forgive the wind noise but it really is a (high altitude) desert out there
